#09 Topic: Optical properties of sea ice – measurements on different scales
Lecturer: Marcel Nicolaus
Date: Thursday, May 15, 2025 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Sea ice is a key element in controlling the energy exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean in ice-covered waters. The albedo-temperature feedback is the most prominent positive feedback contributing to Arctic warming and amplification. In this lecture, I will introduce the background and theory of optical properties of sea ice (and snow) and show how these optical properties are measured across spatial and temporal scales. I will present exemplary and recent results and discuss the main aspects for successful measurements.
